Why access is worth more in Wyoming
Wyoming's checkerboard is the reason. Across much of the state, ownership alternates section by section between private and public, a leftover of the railroad land grants. The result is enormous blocks of public land that are effectively unreachable because getting there means crossing private corners.
So a Wyoming lease is often not just buying you the ground you are standing on — it can be the key to reaching public land nobody else can get to. Ask specifically what the access includes and get it in writing, because the legal picture around corner crossing has been actively litigated and is worth checking rather than assuming.
Nonresident tags are a draw
Like Montana, Wyoming allocates nonresident big game licenses through a spring drawing with quotas, and there is a preference point system on top of it. Antelope and deer are far easier to draw than elk in most of the state, which makes Wyoming a good place for a first western hunt.
Confirm current deadlines and quotas with the Wyoming Game and Fish Department. Apply first, then line up your ground.
Wyoming landowners
Ranches here sell antelope access cheap and often, deer access for more, and elk access for a lot — and many run all three off the same ground across a fall. Wyoming also has landowner licence provisions worth asking the Game and Fish Department about for your specific property.
