Hunting Leases

Duck & Goose Hunting Leases — Eagle Lake and Colorado County, Texas

Eagle Lake calls itself the Goose Hunting Capital of the World, and it has the receipts. The rice prairie running through Colorado, Wharton, Austin, and Waller counties sits at the bottom of the Central Flyway, and what it offers birds — flooded rice stubble, prairie potholes, shallow pasture ponds, and harvested fields with waste grain — is exactly what pulls specklebellies, snows, and big ducks down out of the sky every winter. The Hunting Exchange lists this ground free to browse, with escrow protection on every season lease and instant pay on day hunts.

Why this ground leases

Duck and goose hunting on the upper Texas coastal prairie is field and water hunting, and it depends almost entirely on private land. Water beats acreage here — fifty acres of shallow flooded rice will out-lease four hundred dry acres every season. Rice rotation is the whole game: harvested rice with a second-crop ratoon or a flooded stubble field is the single most valuable thing on this prairie, and geese need dry fields too, since specklebelly and snow goose hunting is often a decoy spread in a stubble field rather than a hunt over water.

Waterfowl ground gets committed in September and October, not December. Hunters and guides who intend to hunt this prairie all season are locking down water well before the first split opens, so a tract listed early gets seen by people still deciding where they'll spend the season.

What you can lease

A full-season waterfowl lease is the simplest arrangement and prices best per acre. Larger rice operations often split by blind or by field instead, letting two or three groups hunt without ever crossing paths. Day access — a handful of weekends sold individually — is the low-commitment way to find out what your ground is worth. Plenty of this prairie also doubles as September dove ground before the water goes on, so it's two seasons out of the same acreage.
