Where DFW hunters go

West of Fort Worth the country opens into the Cross Timbers and the Rolling Plains — oak motte, mesquite, and pasture, with good whitetail and strong quail in wet years. South of the Metroplex toward Hillsboro and Waco is mixed ag and river bottom with heavy hog numbers.

North toward the Red River you pick up bottomland hardwoods and, in the right spots, genuine waterfowl on the reservoirs and flooded ag.

What it costs versus how far you drive

Ground within an hour of the Metroplex carries a real convenience premium and tends to be smaller tracts with more hunters on them. Push out to three hours west or south and the same money buys noticeably more acreage per gun.

Leases here mostly turn over between February and June, so the search happens in spring even though the season is in the fall.
