Texas dove season opens September 1 statewide, and it's the busiest single day on the Texas hunting calendar. Fields that hold birds are booked well before then — start looking in late July or early August if you want a good one for opening weekend.
What makes a field is food and water together: sunflower, milo, or cut grain within reach of a stock tank or a creek, with bare ground for the birds to land on. A field with feed but no water nearby will hold birds for a morning and then go quiet.
Most dove access is sold by the gun for the day, which makes it the cheapest way onto private ground in Texas and the easiest way to try a property before committing to a season. Some landowners sell a short lease covering the whole early season instead.
Ask how many guns will be on the field. Dove hunting is safe and enjoyable at reasonable density and neither of those things at fifteen guns on eighty acres.
