Fredericksburg country
Gillespie County is the heart of the Hill Country lease market — an easy drive from Austin and San Antonio, and dense with whitetail. Deer here are numerous rather than large, which makes it good country for a first lease, for putting a kid on a deer, or for a group that wants to hunt often rather than hold out for one animal.
Rio Grande turkey are strong through the county's live oak and cedar draws, and the spring season is a real second reason to hold a lease here rather than a fall-only one.
Axis and exotics
Free-ranging axis deer have spread across Gillespie and neighboring Mason and Kimble counties. Because they're exotic, there's no season and no limit on private land, so a lease with axis on it stays useful in July when nothing else is open. Blackbuck, fallow, and aoudad turn up on some places as well.
Ask specifically whether exotic access is included in the lease price or billed per animal — both arrangements are common here, and the difference is significant.
