Axis Deer & Exotic Hunting Leases — Texas Hill Country

Free-ranging axis deer have been part of the Hill Country for the better part of a century — brought in as ranch stock, they got out, and never left. Today Kerr, Bandera, Gillespie, Real, Kendall, and Mason counties hold free-ranging axis, aoudad, blackbuck, fallow, and sika alongside native whitetail, and in most of that country the exotics get hunted casually or not at all. The Hunting Exchange lists this ground free to browse, with escrow protection on every season lease and instant pay on day hunts.

The one thing that makes exotics different

Free-ranging exotics on private land in Texas have no closed season and no bag limit — they're not classified as game animals, so the state season structure that governs a whitetail lease doesn't apply to them. A hunting license is still required, and the rules around high-fenced and released animals differ, so check the current TPWD Outdoor Annual and confirm your own situation before taking a booking. For a landowner, that single fact changes the economics of the whole property: the calendar stops being four months long, days can be sold instead of just seasons, axis meat has its own following among hunters who are there for the table rather than the rack, and summer becomes peak season rather than dead time.

What you can offer

Year-round day access is the strongest exotic product — two- and three-day hunts, sold individually, all year. A combination lease pairs whitetail in the fall with exotics the rest of the year, to the same party or different ones. Off-season-only access keeps a fall deer lease exactly as it is and sells February through August separately, which is often the easiest money on a Hill Country place. Exotics pair naturally with hogs, which run year-round in this country too, and with spring Rio Grande turkey on the same ground.
