Granite country deer

Llano County sits on the Llano Uplift, and the granite outcrops, live oak, and mesquite make it look different from the limestone Hill Country to the south. The whitetail density is among the highest in the state, and the county is a short drive from Austin, which keeps demand steady and leases moving quickly in the spring.

The Llano River and its tributaries run through the county, so water is generally less of a limiting factor here than farther west — worth weighing in a dry year.

What you can hunt, and when

Whitetail is the main draw, with archery from late September and general season from early November. Free-ranging axis are established and huntable year-round with no limit on private land, and hogs are heavy along the river bottoms.

Because Llano leases tend to be smaller tracts than South Texas ground, ask how many guns share the place and whether the boundaries are fenced — on a few hundred acres, both answers matter a lot.
