Hunting Leases

Hunting Leases Near Amarillo, Texas

Amarillo is the doorway to the Texas Panhandle, and the hunting around it is not like the rest of the state. South and east of town the high plains drop into Palo Duro Canyon country and the Canadian River breaks — red-rock draws, cedar and mesquite, cottonwood bottoms and big open grass in between. This is mule deer country first and whitetail country along the creeks and river bottoms, and the two can share the same ground. North and west across Moore, Hartley, Oldham and Deaf Smith counties it's flat, farmed and dotted with playa lakes, which is where the dove and waterfowl are. The lease country is close: a place in Armstrong, Donley or Randall County is an easy drive from town, and hunters out of Lubbock, Oklahoma City, Dallas and Colorado make the same trip for real mule deer, wide-open country and a lot fewer people per section than most of Texas. What people hunt here

Mule deer hold in the canyons, breaks and rougher grassland. A lease that can offer mule deer is a different product from a plain whitetail lease, and it's the strongest card a Panhandle landowner holds. Whitetail run the river and creek bottoms and the wooded draws, and in the right spot a single lease can carry both deer species.

Dove come in volume over cut grain, sunflower fields and the edges of playas, and opening weekend in the Panhandle is a real event. Quail — bobwhite and blue — are worth planning a season around in wet years. Hogs are showing up more and more, year round. Turkey use the river drainages and shelterbelts in the spring, and waterfowl work the playas and stock tanks when there's water.

Season leases vs. day hunts

Most ranch ground around Amarillo trades as a season lease — a group of guns, a set price, camp privileges or not. That's the traditional shape and it works.

But a lot of Panhandle ground is better suited to day hunts than landowners realize. A dove field is a complete product in a single afternoon, and one field can be sold more than once. Hogs have no closed season on private land. If you own farm or ranch ground out here and have always assumed leasing means handing the place over for four months, day access is the version that doesn't.

Hunting just south of here is covered on our Lubbock page, and the two regions overlap through Briscoe, Hall and Childress counties.
